Web resource for veterinary history studies which contains government reports (c.1850-1947) on medical-related issues during British rule in India. Several volumes relating to human diseases are being supplemented with veterinary reports.
This part of the collection is rich in material relating to the practice of veterinary medicine in colonial India and Burma, and is especially important for the study of the interaction of health, medicine and the environment. It contains official documents covering the whole of the administrative district as well as reports from individual states. A major part of the collection comprises veterinary reports dating from a significant period in veterinary history in India, when emphasis changed from military supplies (horses, oxen) to livestock, after outbreaks of cattle disease in the 1860s. One consequence was the establishment of veterinary colleges, schools and laboratories during the 1860s to 80s.
While the introduction of western veterinary medicine into south Asia was linked at first with military resources, it is clear that the establishment of the Civil Veterinary Departments in British India later in the nineteenth century represented a more fundamental engagement with animal health and welfare by the colonial authorities. Following the example of the Bombay Presidency which established its Civil Veterinary Department in 1876, all the major administrations had set up a similar unit by 1914. This collection encompasses all the major research institutes and veterinary schools at that time and beyond, and provides vital official documents for anyone researching medical, veterinary, social and colonial history. The studies of zoonoses and public health are particularly pertinent.

The NBEC provides standardized licensing examinations for use by state and provincial licensing boards as part of their licensure procedure for veterinarians.
The convergence of people, animals, and our environment has created a new dynamic in which the health of each group is inextricably interconnected. The challenges associated with this dynamic are demanding, profound, and unprecedented.
Despite spectacular achievements in microbial genetics and genomics, we know relatively little about how such zoonotic agents are maintained in nature or how they respond to environmental (often anthropogenic) changes. Improvements are needed in our ability to detect and respond to emerging zoonotic agents, particularly those that appear suddenly and are capable of spreading over large areas. In order to more effectively prevent or control zoonotic diseases, it will be necessary to better understand the ecology of their respective etiologic agents.
The One Health Initiative is a call to action for collaboration and cooperation among health science professions, academic institutions, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and industries towards improved assessment, treatment, and prevention of cross-species disease transmission and mutually prevalent, but non-transmitted, human and animal diseases and medical conditions. A changing environment populated by interconnected animal and human contact creates significant challenges. These challenges require integrated solutions and call for collaborative leadership.
One Health Initiative will unite human and veterinary medicine The One Health Initiative is a movement to forge co-equal, all inclusive collaborations between physicians, osteopaths, veterinarians, dentists, nurses and other scientific-health and environmentally related disciplines, including the American Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the U.S. National Environmental Health Association (NEHA). Additionally, more than 535 prominent scientists, physicians and veterinarians worldwide have endorsed the initiative.

The NOVICE project aims to use ICT in an innovative way to support lifelong learning in the veterinary profession. The project has created a website, which is a professional social network [link], using Web 2.0 tools such as wikis and blogs for informal learning of veterinarians and veterinary students; with a support network of ICT educationalists. The project will research the benefits of ICT in supporting informal lifelong learning and will disseminate evidence of best practice to improve the quality of education on a broader scale.
The NOVICE project’s founding partners are: • The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, The Netherlands • The University of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, Germany • The Royal Veterinary College, London, UK • The Faculty of Veterinary Science, Szent Istvan University, Budapest, Hungary • The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Bucharest, Bucharest, Romania
What makes the NOVICE professional network special? • The NOVICE website was started by universities • It crosses boundaries of distance, time, cost and language • Registration is restricted to veterinarians, students and educationalists, so it is a safe environment to share experiences • Undergraduate students involved in the project should become professionals who are keen to continue informal learning using ICT, thus helping the students of the future • NOVICE promotes the dissemination of evidence based information • Assistance with using the Web 2.0 tools is provided via Frequently Asked Questions and Helpdesks • NOVICE is only accessible for members of the veterinary comunity
The network Of Veterinary ICT in Education (NOVICE) is funded through the Lifelong Learning Programme of the Education and Culture Directorate General from the European Commission.
