WVA InformationNew Issue of Healthy Animals Now OnlineSource: This quarterly online newsletter compiles ARS news and expert resources on the health and well-being of agricultural livestock, poultry and fish. Each quarter, one article in Healthy Animals focuses on a particular element of ARS animal research. The current issue examines efforts to improve national surveillance for swine influenza virus. Other research highlighted in this issue includes: " Parasite parentage. ARS scientists trace Toxoplasma parasite's family tree. " Hoppy and healthy. Hops extract may reduce Clostridium in chickens. " Off the wall. Modified lignin could benefit livestock feed. Professionals interested in animal health issues may want to bookmark the site as a resource for locating animal health experts. An index lists ARS research locations covering approximately 70 animal health topics. These range from specific diseases, such as Lyme disease, to broad subjects like nutrition or parasites. The site also provides complete contact information for the more than 25 ARS research groups that conduct studies aimed at protecting and improving farm animal health. Dr Ramdeo Ramchurn (Dev) was born in 1945 in Mauritius in a village environment of Dagoti?re, where he spent his childhood days attending the local school. He won the primary school national junior scholarship and was able to attend the prestigious Royal College in the town of Curepipe. After obtaining a Cambridge Higher School Certificate, he taught mathematics and sciences at Hindu Boys College during 1966,Balliol College and New Eton College during 1967 and Botany at St Andrews School in 1968. He provided much effort to the nearby island of Rodrigues where he has been in several capacities. He had initiated the “antenne universitaire” in 1982 and ,then after, coordinated all courses offered by the University of Mauritius and pertinent to Rodrigues in the field of agriculture and forestry. He has also taught most students presently employed at the “Agricultural Services” of the island and supervised several projects. Dr Ramchurn obtained an MPhil in Agriculture in 1999 and later a PhD in Animal Sciences & Industry in 2004. At the university, he had also been an active member of the Union of Academic Staff Association serving as its treasurer, secretary and finally as President in 1982. He had been a member of senate for over two decades and a member of the University Council on three occasions. He has several experiences with projects financed by International organisations such as Furthermore, he has widely traveled in most African, SE Asian and European countries. Dr. Faouzi Kechrid
Dr. Kechrid was Chair of the organizing committee of the 27th World Veterinary Congress. He is a recipient of the French Ministry of Agriculture’s professional designation known as “Chevalier dans l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole” for advancing Franco-Tunisian cooperation in research. Since February 2007, Dr Kechrid has been regional manager of the animal health centre for North Africa based in Tunis, to coordinate the regional programme on High Pathogenic Avian Influenza in North Africa and Egypt and other transboundary animal diseases under the FAO Emergency Centre of Transboundary Animal Diseases, the FAO sub-regional representation in Tunisia and the other United Nations international organizations, international donor community and multilateral agencies.
