FAO/WHO work on Salmonella and Campylobacter in chicken meat

Source:
FAO and WHO have been requested to provide scientific advice to the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) on issues relating to the control of Salmonella and Campylobacter on poultry and chicken meat along the food chain. The advice will feed into the ongoing work within the CCFH to develop guidelines for the control of Salmonella and Campylobacter in chicken meat. To provide the necessary scientific advice a joint FAO/WHO expert meeting will be implemented from 4 to 8 May 2009 in FAO headquarters in Rome.

Please find attached a call for data and experts which has been recently issued. We would appreciate it if you could also distribute it to other colleagues who might been interested. For this endeavour it is particularly important to get information from developing countries, considering the importance of poultry in these countries and also in order to ensure that the scientific advice and ultimately the Codex guidelines are also relevant to these countries.

Please submit any relevant information (electronic and / or hard copies), in any official United Nationslanguage (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian), and with title and short description of the content in English if possible, to either members of the JEMRA Secretariat (Sarah Cahill at FAO (sarah.cahill@fao.org) and Peter Ben Embarek at WHO (benembarekp@who.int), by 31 March 2009.

The closing date forreceipt of expressions of interest and CVs for the forthcoming meeting is 10th March 2009. Submissions received after that date will be considered for future activities in this area.

Please do not hesitate to contact either myself or members of the JEMRA Secretariat (Sarah Cahill at FAO (sarah.cahill@fao.org) and Peter Ben Embarek at WHO (benembarekp@who.int) for any further information.

New Issue of Healthy Animals Now Online

Source:
USDA Agricultural Research Service
The Agricultural Research Service today posted a new issue of Healthy Animals.

This quarterly online newsletter compiles ARS news and expert resources on the health and well-being of agricultural livestock, poultry and fish.

Each quarter, one article in Healthy Animals focuses on a particular element of ARS animal research. The current issue examines efforts to improve national surveillance for swine influenza virus.

Other research highlighted in this issue includes:

" Parasite parentage. ARS scientists trace Toxoplasma parasite's family tree.

" Hoppy and healthy. Hops extract may reduce Clostridium in chickens.

" Off the wall. Modified lignin could benefit livestock feed.

Professionals interested in animal health issues may want to bookmark the site as a resource for locating animal health experts. An index lists ARS research locations covering approximately 70 animal health topics. These range from specific diseases, such as Lyme disease, to broad subjects like nutrition or parasites. The site also provides complete contact information for the more than 25 ARS research groups that conduct studies aimed at protecting and improving farm animal health.
