World Veterinary Day celebrated in Chittagong, Bangladesh

Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) in collaboration with Bangladesh Veterinary Association (BVA) Chittagong Chapter organized daylong activities to celebrate the World Veterinary Day on 24th April, 2010. There were mass rally attended by the students and teachers of CVASU and later a seminar was held on the theme of this year- “One World; One Health, More Cooperation between Veterinarian & Physician”.

The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Nitish Chandra Debnath, Honble Vice-Chancellor of CVASU as chief guest and Dr. Farhad Hossain, ADLO, Chittagong and Secretary of BVA Chittagong Chapter as the chairperson. Other distinguished guests include Prof. Dr. M. Masuduzzaman, Director (Students Welfare), CVASU; Prof. Dr. A K Saifuddin, Director, SAQ Teaching Veterinary Hospital, CVASU; Prof. Dr. M A Matin Prodhan, Dean, faculty of Veterinary Medicine, CVASU; Prof. Dr. Gouranga Chandra Chanda, Dean, Faculty f Food Science and Technology, CVASU.

In his speech, Prof. Debnath emphasized the importance of collaborations between physicians and veterinarian to combat the challenges of emerging infectious and zoonotic diseases and food safety issues. He warned that it is not possible to combat new life threatening diseases by the veterinarians or by physicians alone and therefore both groups have to come together in a common platform for the welfare of human being. Other speakers also stressed the need of concerted workplan between physicians and veterinarian for combating all emerging health related issues.

After the inaugural session, a keynote paper on the theme was presented by Dr. Marjina Akter, Lecturer, CVASU where she focused on the growingly popular One World One Health movement and its relevancy with veterinary, medical and environment health. She also highlighted the need for collaboration between veterinarian and physicians under the movement of One Health Bangladesh initiative.

The seminar was successfully completed after the closing remark delivered by the Chairman of Chittagong Veterinary Association.
