The UEMA originated at the Federation of Schools of Maranhao - FESM. In 1975 the FESM entered the School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Louis. The FESM was transformed at the State University of Maranhão - UEMA.
The objectives of UEMA are to promote the teaching of undergraduate and graduate university extension and research, dissemination of knowledge, knowledge production and new technologies interacting with the community, with a view to developing social, economic and political development of Maranhão.
According to its Statute Maranhão State University is organized around the following principles:
I drive equity and administration;
II Organizational structure based on departments, coordinated by centers, as wide as they allow the characteristics of their field of activities;
III severability of the functions of teaching, research and extension, prohibited duplication of means to ends or equivalent;
IV Administrative decentralization and rationality of organization, with full use of material and human resources;
V University of field, the cultivation of the key areas of human knowledge, studied in themselves or in relation to future applications, and technical and professional;
VI Flexibility of methods and criteria, with a view to individual differences of students, regional peculiarities and possibilities of combining knowledge for new courses and research programs;
VII Freedom of study, research, education and extension, remaining open to all currents of thought, without, however, participate in groups or partisan movements;
VIII Cooperation with scientific institutions, cultural and educational, public and private, national and international, to achieve their goals.
