The School of Veterinary Medicine has its origins in the Institute of Veterinary Medicine. The Institute initiated the first scholarly work February 1963 with 31 students.

The institution submitted its first class of veterinarians in 1967. In 1969 the Institute was transformed into Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry and in 1970 its first graduating class of animal husbandry.

Today, after more than 40 years since its beginnings as an Institute of Veterinary Medicine, the current Faculty of Agricultural Sciences has approximately 1600 students distributed in the undergraduate programs of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Aquaculture Engineering and Agricultural Engineering, a Masters and a Ph.D. in Animal Science as well as specializations in Animal Production, Pastures and Forages, Agro-Environmental Management and small animal clinic, of whom about 600 are undergraduate students in Veterinary Medicine, which has been reaccredited by the National Accreditation Council as a high quality program.

The Veterinary Medicine Program's mission is holistic veterinary medical form, to help prevent, control and eradicate the health problems of pets, as both supply company, as in the wild, according to criteria of productivity, sustainability , competitiveness and ethics, with emphasis on training in clinical preventive medicine, public health, socio humanities, and business management, promoting scientific and technological development of the livestock sector in Colombia. To achieve this, their teaching and learning are flexible, relevant and subject to periodic self-assessment to ensure the update of its scientific content, technical and humanistic, to enable its graduates to compete effectively in the national and internationally.

The student must take the courses and Constitutional Citizenship Training and reading skills in a Foreign Language.

The undergraduate course is 10 semesters.
