The emergence of professional veterinary medicine in Russia belongs to the 10-13 centuries. Training began with the discovery in 1733 of the first veterinary school - Konyushennaya school. Higher education in the Altai veterinary organization incorporated in 1962, the veterinary faculty.

In the transition to a market economy requires improvement of the quality of education. The curricula changed: along with the theory to prevent a large place was given to the development of practical skills for the treatment of animals. In this regard, the department was renamed the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and then in 1996 - the Institute of Veterinary Medicine.

The Institute is as close to the conditions of agricultural production. It is composed of eight departments. All department staffed by highly qualified scientists and specialists.

For training at the institute opened postgraduate. Graduate students enrolled in four departments. Created a specialized Council for the Protection of theses for the degree of doctor and candidate of veterinary sciences. During the work of the Council are protected more than 20 dissertations.

The spacious building of the Institute, physiokabinet, operating X-ray study, teaching and clinical laboratories, three museums, appointed by the institute enthusiasts vivarium with lots of small domestic and large farm animals - all this is an excellent base for training of veterinary surgeons.

In addition to studying compulsory subjects specified curriculum, students can gain knowledge of one of five specializations: veterinary-sanitary examination, laboratory work, biology and diseases of unproductive animals, biology and disease of deer velvet antler, a veterinary business.
