The Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria is situated on the Onderstepoort campus of the University some 20 km north west of the Hatfield main campus and some 15 km due north of the city centre of Pretoria (Tshwane). It aims to be an internationally accredited seat of veterinary excellence, strives to be globally competitive, regionally pre-eminent and locally relevant whilst providing an effective veterinary interface to Africa.

The Faculty has a proud tradition in veterinary and para-veterinary education, research and service-rendering which dates back to the early 1920s.

Onderstepoort is a small geographical area and is home to various organisations/institutions, light industries and small holdings. There are at least 5 distinct entities in this regard as follows:
The Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria
The University of Pretoria Biomedical Research Centre (UPBRC)

The Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria is one of 46 veterinary faculties in Africa and the only one of its kind in South Africa. It is the second oldest faculty in Africa, dating back to the early 1920’s. With the exception of the faculties in Khartoum (Sudan, 1938), and Cairo (Egypt, 1946), all the other African faculties were established after 1960.

In order to fulfill its mission, the Faculty has 5 academic departments responsible for teaching, research and service rendering. These activities are further facilitated by well developed support services provided by an academic hospital, various departmental laboratories, general and student administrative sections, a teaching animal unit and a number of research centres. The Veterinary Academic Hospital provides state of the art facilities for the clinical departments and is the focus of the Faculty’s service-rendering activities to its immediate community and also serves as a national referral facility.

The Faculty offers an undergraduate veterinary degree programme and a veterinary nursing diploma programme as well as a variety of postgraduate degree programmes. It offers opportunities for local as well as international students in its academic programmes and is committed to international accreditation in support of its quality assurance procedures.

Graduates of the Faculty enjoy national and international recognition and the BVSc degree of the University of Pretoria currently enjoys recognition for registration by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) in the UK, the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) in Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania as well as by the relevant authorities in Malaysia.
