Lithuanian Veterinary Academy
Recognition status: EAEVE Website: http://www.lva.lt/en/item.php The mission and strategic objectives of Lithuanian Veterinary Academy are to train highly qualified veterinary doctors, animal husbandry technologists, veterinary food safety specialists and scientists conforming to international standards and requirements; to develop modern fundamental, applied and experimental research in biomedical sciences, veterinary medicine and zootechnics. Lithuanian Veterinary Academy (LVA) is a university type school of higher education, having rich experience and traditions in training specialists of veterinary medicine, food safety and animal husbandry technology. It is the only scholarly institution, awarding diplomas of higher education for veterinary doctors and animal husbandry technologists in Lithuania. Founded in 1936, Lithuanian Veterinary Academy is the only school of higher education training veterinary doctors and animal husbandry technologists in Lithuania. Lithuanian Veterinary Academy is a state owned, autonomous institution of higher education, with university level status. Veterinary medicine studies are integral studies and last five and a half years. The professional qualification of Veterinary surgeon is awarded. Veterinary food safety studies last four years. The bachelor degree of public health is awarded. The integral study programme consists of three blocks of subjects studied. The first block, which is called general higher education block, contains humanitarian, social, mathematics and natural subjects. The basic part of Veterinary medicine studies contains biomedical sciences, such as anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry and so on. The third block includes specialty subjects. Studying specialty subjects takes about 60 percent of all studies. The programmes contain compulsory and elective subjects and modules. The list of elective subjects of 1-3 semesters includes social, humanitarian and general subjects, specialty subjects are at higher years of studies. It is compulsory to get 1 or 2 credits during each semester from the block of elective subjects. Study process in the faculty is organized in semesters (Veterinary Food Safety and the 1st year of Veterinary Medicine) and cycles, according to study plans, timetables and schedules of lectures. Students, studying in cycles, have three or four subjects at the same time. After finishing the cycle of one subject, they have credit test or exam on set term and start to study next subject or module. At the end of semester there is no examinational session for the ones studying in cycles. During the studies students have to pass integrated exams at the end of nine subject studies. They are examined by a special commission, appointed by Rector. After theory studies and passing integrated exams, students have pre-diploma practice and prepare graduation dissertation. After graduation students are awarded the qualification of graduated veterinary surgeon and a graduation certificate is issued. After finishing veterinary medicine studies, students have possibility to study Residency of Veterinary medicine. Study duration is 2 years. The qualification of veterinary doctor in veterinary medicine is awarded; Doctoral studies in biomedical sciences and veterinary medicine. Study duration is 4 years.
