After being closed in the 18th century, the university reopens in 1979. At the present time, it is organized in departments which are grouped in schools related to specific scientific domains. Blended in with the city, the campus is comprised of buildings with a high patrimonial value from different historical periods. Outside city limits, the university reaches as far as 12km at the Mitra Centre. There are also two experimental estates in the south of Alentejo and several other units scattered over different cities in the south of Portugal where teaching and researching activities are carried out. The Integrated Master??s degree in Veterinary Medicine is designed to bring scientific development to veterinary training, to inculcate a rigorous approach to problem solving as well as to foster critical thinking and scientific curiosity. The development of new diagnostic methodologies and the rapid changes in health legislation require a renewed capacity to address the challenges of an ever-changing profession. The university of ?vora has well-equipped clinical and teaching facilities, unique in Portugal, offering students the opportunity to combine theory and practice, to develop research and to evaluate and communicate findings, all of which considered essential to future professional practice. The subject-specific modules of the curriculum are taught in Pólo da Mitra, a rural environment where students can familiarize with the real world scenarios that await them after their education. The courses offered there place a heavy emphasis on hands-on learning, as the university possesses its own livestock and a Hospital for Animals where students can obtain experience in the healthcare of small and large animals.Notwithstanding this rich environment for learning in which students become actively engaged, ?vora boasts a rich history, culture, recreation sites and beautiful scenery to delight visitors and residents.
