News: UVAS held an open lecture on “Animal Forensic DNA Test”

University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Lahore organized an open lecture on “Animal Forensic DNA Test”. Vice Chancellor, University of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Malik Hussain Mubashir was the chief guest. Present on the occasion were also Prof. Dr. Anwar Naseem (Chairman, National Commission on Biotechnology), UVAS Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nawaz, Faculty of Animal Production & Technology Dean Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abdullah, Faculty members and students of the UVAS.
The seminar was based on animal forensic case that was recently solved by the UVAS Molecular Cytogenetics and Genomics Lab. Describing the details of the case Chairman Department of Livestock Production Prof. Dr. Masroor Elahi Babar told that a party “A” claimed that there bull was stolen by party “B” some two years ago. While Party B claimed that this bulls owns to them. Case was referred to UVAS by DPO Sahiwal. UVAS scientist’s team collected the blood samples of that bull and the relatives of that bull provided by both parties. DNA test was performed and the results declared that bull owns to party “B”.
“This was the first ever forensic case solved in Pakistan through DNA Test”, told Prof. Babar. Speaking at the occasion, UVAS Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nawaz told that this was the milestone laid by UVAS scientist that opened new horizon of research. He told that UVAS scientists are working hard to achieve maximum research and academic goals.
“Number of research papers in impact factor has been ten times increased in 2007 as compared to 2006; as its shifts from 3 to 30” said Prof. Nawaz; addinig, “New degree programs on under graduate and post graduate levels will help getting trained man power in specific areas required by the industry”.
National Commission on Biotechnology Chairman Prof. Dr. Anwar Naseem appreciated UVAS for its excellent research. He said that there is tremendous potential in Pakistan. Higher Education has been growing for last one decade. He said that Science of Forensic had got a very important and critical role in our daily life as it is helpful in investigation on several crimes; adding, “Science useful only when it benefits the common man”.
Prof. Dr. Malik Hussain Mubashir (Vice Chancellor University of Health Sciences) said that “If the common man is not being benefited by the scientific research, there is no use of it at all”. “It is my pleasure to see that a dispute solved by UVAS belongs to a common farmer that has benefited him” he added. He urged the young generation to fcuss their research in bio-terrorism, pedigree determination, finger printing etc… He told that Crop sector is not meeting the needs of national economy; hence the Livestock sector must be focused on commercial basis for which role of UVAS and its scientists is very important
