The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is already working with its member societies to help animals in earthquake-hit Pakistan. This is the latest of a series of catastrophes that WSPA has responded to in recent months.

An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, which occurred on 8 October 2005, has affected large areas in northern Pakistan, leaving tens of thousands of people dead. Massive destruction has taken place in the North Western Frontier Province (NWFP).

Fakhar i Abbas, WSPA's Representative in Pakistan, reports that significant populations of livestock and companion animals are likely to have been affected. WSPA is already arranging to deploy several emergency vet teams from Pakistan and is identifying vets from further afield who may be asked to provide technical support after the immediate animal needs have been addressed. Coordination with member society The Brooke's Pakistan staff is being arranged.

The situation in Pakistan is desperate for people and animals alike. Sadly, it is an all too familiar story. Each year natural disasters wreak havoc on the environment. The human tragedy of these incidents is well documented, but less known is the plight of animals. All too often, they are the forgotten victims.

When peoples' properties are destroyed, animals' homes often disappear too. Wild animals face the prospect of having to flee their home habitat to survive, domesticated animals are at grave risk of remaining trapped and abandoned without food or water, and farm animals to whom so many depend for their livelihoods and subsistence are threatened.
