Today is World Veterinary Day but in this country there is little reason to celebrate – there is a serious shortage of veterinary surgeons here, many are heading for greener pastures and higher salaries overseas.
That means some rural communities are having trouble getting treatment for their pets or stock.
New Zealand is short of nearly 200 vets, mainly because they are going over seas to pay off their student loans. It takes five years to become qualified and many practises are feeling the pinch.

WORLD VETERINARY DAY-2008 Message from Dr. R.H.Usmani, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, M/O Food, Agriculture & Livestock, Government of Pakistan
The animal health services in the country are continuously developed to cater the need of livestock farmers at gross root level. These services include extension, prophylaxis, treatment and diseases monitoring services. Their main focus have been on identification of the prevalent livestock diseases, carrying out treatment and routine vaccination during normal and epidemic conditions in order to assist in controlling, confining and eradication of livestock diseases from the country. The population growth, urbanization and increasing demand of livestock and livestock products have created more pressing need for improved veterinary and allied services through better diagnostic facilities, increased vaccine production and better health coverage to protect the local livestock population. The veterinary services can be classified into Federal level quarantine, policy and development related services, Provincial level animal health and production extension services and veterinary education services in the country.

News: Veterinarians Play Vital Role in Protecting Endangered Species

The New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) says World Veterinary Day, Saturday 26 April, is a great opportunity to highlight the important wildlife work many of its members are involved in, like Department of Conservation (DOC) veterinarian Kate McInnes.
Over 20 endangered kakapo chicks, and potentially many more, are alive today thanks to the preparation, planning and quick response from Kate McInnes, her team, and the pathologists at the New Zealand Wildlife Health Centre at Massey University.
Kate says World Veterinary Day is an opportunity to recognise the work veterinarians do, not just in traditional areas of animal health and welfare, but also in other areas such as wildlife, biosecurity, conservation and environmental study.
“We play a very important role in stabilising and increasing endangered species populations and monitoring biosecurity issues such as avian influenza.
“As populations decline in size, there is an increase in the risk of disease causing a major blow, or even extinction, to the recovery of some endangered species. Having vets involved in conservation programmes creates the opportunity to identify potential problems and prevent them, rather than wait for a crisis to occur.”

The New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) says World Veterinary Day, Saturday 26 April, is a great opportunity to highlight the important wildlife work many of its members are involved in, like New Zealand Wildlife Heath Centre director, Brett Gartrell.
Many injured, sick and endangered New Zealand native wildlife are surviving assault from predators, humans and other wild animals thanks to the centre, run by veterinarians and veterinary nurses at Massey University.
Brett says the centre plays an important role in researching New Zealand wildlife, treating and rehabilitating injured native animals and providing diagnostic pathology services to protect the health and welfare of wildlife, and to maintain biosecurity.
Brett says World Veterinary Day, the international celebration of veterinarians, is a fantastic way of showcasing the wide variety of areas veterinarians work in.
“We have many veterinary students coming through our programme at the Wildlife Centre, but it’s always great to raise awareness of the countless job options available to those considering veterinary or conservation careers.”
He says while the work his team do treating and rehabilitating injured native wildlife is important, their investigative pathology work is more significant as it can have an impact on native species numbers.

The New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) says World Veterinary Day, Saturday 26 April, is a great opportunity to highlight the important wildlife work many of its members are involved in, like Cathy Mitchell who runs a kiwi creche.
Cathy, who works two days a week on the mainland as a dairy cattle veterinarian for Hikurangi Veterinary Clinic, says her veterinary training has put her in good stead for her other job, as ranger for Matakohe Limestone Island’s ‘kiwi creche’.
Cathy says when her children left home she and her husband thought life as rangers on the predator-free island seemed like a great next step. Her experience as a veterinarian opened new doors for her and made the transition to island life much easier.
“My knowledge as a veterinarian makes assessing the health of the kiwi and other animals effortless, and microchipping the native residents for tracking is a breeze,” she says.
When not busy trapping stoats and rats to maintain the island’s predator-free status, Cathy and Peter play an important role in monitoring the progress of the four resident breeding kiwi adults, their chicks, and the 20 young kiwis brought over from the mainland.

BVA President calls on the veterinary community to sign up to UDAW
World Veterinary Day (WVD) is held annually on the last Saturday of April and this week (Saturday 26 April) around the world, from Sudan to Taiwan and Nepal to Canada, veterinarians will be celebrating the profession’s diversity and its contributions to human and animal health and welfare.
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is using WVD to showcase the global role of the veterinary profession in raising standards of animal welfare by signing up to the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW). Demonstrating its commitment to animal welfare, the BVA has formally supported the UDAW. The Declaration, which represents the world’s first international agreement on animal welfare, recognises that sentient animals are capable of pain and suffering, deserving consideration and respect, and calls for effective animal welfare legislation to be developed and enforced around the world. It is hoped that the Declaration will ultimately be adopted by the United Nations.
BVA President Nick Blayney said: “I am delighted that BVA is supporting this vital campaign to recognise the responsibilities that humans have towards the welfare of sentient animals. I wholeheartedly endorse the inclusion within the Declaration of the ‘Five Freedoms’ as the guiding principles of animal welfare.
“I strongly believe that the veterinary profession should be part of this important global initiative, and hope that other veterinary associations around the world will sign up to this campaign. I also fully support the proposal to take the campaign to the United Nations, and hope that the Declaration will represent a huge step forward in gaining international recognition that animal welfare matters.”

Castrating a hippopotamus or medicating a lion may not be everyone’s idea of fun, but it’s all in a day’s work for Richard at the $4.6 million state-of-the-art facility – the first national centre for conservation medicine in the world.
The centre has a public viewing gallery which offers visitors clear views into the centre's laboratory, large treatment room and operating theatre.
“We’ve become one of the zoo’s exhibits,” says Richard.
“One of the really nice things about our work is that we get to talk to people and explain what we’re doing and why.”
Veterinarians at the centre undertake research, diagnostic work and specialised teaching to promote native species conservation and national biosecurity. Richard says conservation medicine is all about taking a holistic view, looking at the connections between the health of people, animals and the environment.

The Ghana Veterinary Medical Association [GVMA] is celebrating the World Veterinary Day in a challenging period in it's over three decade long existence.
Veterinary professionals, both surgeons and technicians, in the civil service are struggling to access adequate resources to work efficiently. Many of them are disgruntled because current policies which put them at a disadvantage.
Despite all these challenges, veterinary professionals plan, through their association, to organise a series of media talk shows, public symposium on avian influenza and climax it with a grand durbur of chiefs in the capital city of Accra.
An aggressive media publicity seems to be the only means left for veterinarians to put their numerous cases on the agenda of development for Ghana.
Long live the veterinary profession in Africa.
Long live the veterinary profession world wide.
Dr Kofi Kwansah-Flson DVM MSc
Veterinary member of GVMA

Wish you the best in this wonderful world
remember, we have to build trust among people

Every year, the AVMA promotes World Veterinary Day to the press and public while encouraging U.S. veterinary groups to celebrate the occasion on the last Saturday of April. This year, one country's celebration will receive a $1,000 award.
The World Veterinary Association established World Veterinary Day in 2000. The WVA and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) recently created the World Veterinary Day Award to reward the most successful celebration of the profession by national veterinary associations alone or in cooperation with other veterinary groups.
In 2007, veterinary groups around the globe celebrated World Veterinary Day. Events in India ranged from a children's painting competition to one-day programs that provided free veterinary care. A chapter of the Nigerian VMA arranged a weeklong program to offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs. The British Veterinary Association released "The best of care," a consumer guide to professional health care for pets.

As we have entered the new Millennium new and exciting challenges are facing the veterinary profession. The traditional and fundamental role of direct animal health care is being widened to issues such as the prevention and control of trans-boundary infectious diseases, veterinary public health including food safety and animal welfare. New demands for involvement of the profession also include bio-security and the protection of the world's bio-diversity.
World Veterinary Day was instigated by the World Veterinary Association in 2000 to be celebrated annually on the last Saturday of April. World Veterinary Day is a unique opportunity to highlight the different roles veterinarians play and to illustrate their importance for our society today in facing new challenges.
The WVA and the OIE agreed on the creation of the World Veterinary Day Award aimed at rewarding the most successful celebration of the veterinary profession by national veterinary associations, alone, or in cooperation with any other selected veterinary body.

Dr. Leon H. Russell, President, World Veterinary Association presented a brief report to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
Dr Russell thanked Dr. Vallat, Director General, for his support of the 2002 collaborative agreement between the OIE and the WVA in areas of mutual interest. These include the role of the veterinary profession in animal health and animal welfare; and the relationships between “non-official’ private veterinarians, paraprofessionals and “official” veterinary services; and, control and eradication of avian influenza (HPAI).
The new activities of the WVA include an area of greater activity, which are of interest to the OIE. One of the up most importances is an increased focus on current animal welfare issues that can be affected by global veterinary medicine. The WVA just launched the Veterinary Animal Welfare Network or VAWN. Using the WVA website, the VAWN will communicate animal welfare matters to the global veterinary community.
President Russell presented the WVA’s celebration of an annual World Veterinary Day (WVD), which has contributed to a positive public image of the veterinarian’s activity in animal health and animal welfare issues. Since 2000, there has been an annual celebration to recognize the veterinary medical widely throughout the world. On 28 April 2007, it was celebrated from Pakistan to Ghana, from India to New Zealand, and from Nepal to the USA.
The WVA and OIE have now agreed on the creation of the World Veterinary Day Award to recognize the most successful celebration of the veterinary profession by national veterinary associations, alone, or in cooperation with any other selected veterinary body. The first WVA/OIE World Veterinary Day Award will be selected in 2008, and it will be based on the theme “Celebrate Our Diversity”
There will be a tool kit for a guide to the WVD Award. The Applicants should use “tool kit” to create events that reach an audience not reached by traditional events. These events should be public events, organized with support of the media, open days, competitions, or any event that could create attention and get the messages out to a large number of people.
The WVD Award criteria are as follows:
-Subject addressed to celebrate the event, specific audience for which it was organized and the attendance rate.
-Press coverage received
-Number of non veterinarians and veterinarians attracted to event
-Proposed actions to be taken as a follow up
The WVD activities of the events should be oriented towards:
-Strengthen the veterinary profession and national veterinary services against natural or intentional biological disasters.
-Animal production food safety: the role of the veterinarian at farm, abattoirs, agro-industries, and entire food chain.
-Veterinarians in the provision of animal health services: from companion animals to farm animals and wildlife.
-National veterinary associations: the role of private veterinarian and his/her relationship to the national veterinary services. (There is need for increased communication and bonding between the national veterinary associations and national Veterinary Services to help facilitate rapid identification, response and elimination of newly emerging diseases.)
The WVA/OIE World Veterinary Award will consist of US$ 1,000 prize money and a WVD Award plaque. The Award will be presented at the OIE Symposium of 2008 World Veterinary Congress, July 27-31, 2008 in Vancouver

News: Veterinarian is a doctor of all living beings except human beings
Posted by: JimEdwards on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 01:05 AM
WVDay
|
On the eve of World Veterinary Day, Faculty staff and students of Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan discussed the Role of veterinarian in the Society. It was resolved that “Veterinarian is a doctor of all living beings except human beings”. In this perspective various roles veterinarian is playing or has to play in the society were tailored:
* Animal health issue/Treatment of sick animals: He/she is working for the welfare of the poultry, livestock, wildlife, marine, etc. He/she has to look after its health, production and reproduction.
* Production of good quality products: For the production of good quality products, a veterinarian is not only playing his/her role for animal health but also striving hard for the production of good quality animal products and byproducts for the welfare of humans.
* Work for public health safety: Not only animal health and production is important for veterinarian but public health is also of prime importance for veterinarian. He/she is trying utmost efforts for the public health wherever he/she is.
* Surveillance of transboundary animal diseases (TADs): All animal diseases have the potential to adversely affect human populations by reducing the quantity and quality of food, other livestock products (hides, skins, fibers) and animal power (traction, transport) that can be obtained from a given quantity of resources and by reducing people's assets. Of these, transboundary animal diseases tend to have the most serious consequences. TADs are epidemic diseases which are highly contagious or transmissible and have the potential for very rapid spread, irrespective of national borders, causing serious socio-economic and possibly public health consequences. Therefore, veterinarians in their own countries are trying to combat these diseases.
* Legislation: Various clauses of legislation about the welfare of animals, poultry, wildlife and experimental animals are the responsibilities of veterinarians. Cruelty with animals and birds is not humanly, therefore, veterinarians in Pakistan are trying at their own level as well as at government level so that legislation should be implemented for the safeguard of the animals.
* Animal welfare: As mentioned earlier “Veterinarian is a doctor of all living beings except human beings”, therefore, animal welfare is the primary responsibility of a “Vet” which is are playing effectively. Human population pressures, habitat loss, environmental degradation and illegal hunting in have resulted in the loss of biodiversity and near extinction of certain wildlife species. Appropriate management of biodiversity would lay the foundations for a more positive future for the rural people. Veterinary profession contributes positively to animal health management.
* Human resource development: In addition to disease management, health care, Veterinary Institutions are engaged in the development of manpower including Veterinary and para-veterinary training.
* Miscellaneous roles: Words like economist, conservator, and anthropologist seem very little but have very vast meanings which veterinarians in their own capacity in every country are playing.
Employment opportunities for veterinarians in Pakistan
1. Livestock and Dairy Development Department (L&DD)
2. Agricultural banks
3. As Food biochemists in food industry as quality controller.
4. Veterinarians are also serving private poultry sector, commercial poultry farms, feed mills, hatcheries, breeding farms, etc.
5. As a Quarantine officer
6. In various capacities in Atomic Energy Commission.
7. National Institute of Health (NIH)
8. Brook’s hospital
