calendar
Source:
A one-day seminar entitled ‘One World, One Disease,’ will take place at the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), Wimpole Street, London, on 24 June 2008.

The event will examine some of the effects of climate change on patterns of animal health and the impact of this on humans.

The meeting will provide an understanding of the complexity of the global changes that we face, and will work towards the integrated approach needed to manage the serious problems that threaten animal and human health.

About two-thirds of new infectious diseases that threaten humans come from animals. With global climate change, this looks set to increase. Now more than ever, it is important that veterinary and medical colleagues come together to discuss disease control strategies.

News: AVMA convention-goers can lend a hand to New Orleans animal shelters
Posted by: JimEdwards on Sunday, March 16, 2008 - 11:51 PM

March 15, 2008

"Voluntourism" is a growing trend combining travel and volunteer work. Since Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has been a hot spot for such altruistic trips. AVMA members and their families attending the Association's Annual Convention in New Orleans this July will help the city by refurbishing four area animal shelters.
Attendees of the AVMA Annual Convention in New Orleans this July will have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves to help rehabilitate area animal shelters still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

On July 17-18, just before the first day of the convention on July 19, up to 100 volunteers will refurbish animal shelters in four city parishes identified by the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"Knowing what kind of tragedy and hardship the people and the animals endured as a result of Katrina, we thought what better way to give back than leverage our convention to help repair some of the damage that was done," explained David Little, director of the AVMA Convention and Meeting Planning Division.

Adding a philanthropic project to the AVMA convention experience had been in the works for a couple years, added Malyssa Sopko, assistant director of the division. Given the ongoing recovery efforts in post-Katrina New Orleans, the site of the 2008 convention was the perfect place to begin the project. "What better place to roll this out?" Sopko said.

Dakar (Senegal) 25-27 March 2008
"Towards the harmonisation and improvement of registration and quality control".
Source:

Veterinary medicinal products have increasingly become a focus of attention and sometimes of strong warnings due to uncontrolled or illicit use, especially in some developing countries. There has been a significant increase in the demand for these products, particularly in the African continent where many of the OIE listed animal diseases are still prevalent. As a result, the liberalisation of the sector in Africa has led to veterinary medicinal products being increasingly traded and has also contributed to a diversification of internal and external sources of supply, with the risk of ending with profit driven supplying at the expense of the quality.

OIE strategies prove relevant and efficient
Source:

As the international community prepares for a third international conference on highly pathogenic influenza (HPAI) H5N1 to take place in New Delhi , India the OIE reiterates its strategic approach for tackling the crisis.

60 countries reported an H5N1 infection in the period 2003-2007 . Up to December 2006 more than 200 million birds were culled or died of the disease and according to the World Health Organisation, so far the human deaths toll is of 206 worldwide. OIE maintains its same strategies prepared and published with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and, announced at the first international conference on HPAI H5N1 held in Geneva in 2005:
- tackle the disease at animal source,
- strengthen governance of national Veterinary Services (VS) worldwide,
- develop early warning and rapid response capacity of VS, among other key actions, in face of outbreaks - a strategy applicable to any major animal disease including zoonoses, not solely HPAI H5N1,
- develop close collaboration between animal and human health national and international authorities,
- develop an HPAI H5N1 vaccine bank for developing countries.

WVA Information: Critically Important Antimicrobials
Posted by: JimEdwards on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - 02:00 PM
calendar
Joint FAO/WHO/OIE Stakeholders Meeting, Rome, Italy. 26 November 2007

Professor Leon H. Russell, DVM, MPH, PhD, President, World Veterinary Association

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) is the only Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) representing the veterinary profession globally. As such, the mission of the WVA is to promote globally both animal and human health and well being through sustainable and humane use and management of animals. This includes animal welfare. The WVA also contributes to the veterinary protection and sustainability of the environment.

The WVA will respond to the following questions posed by the organisers of this stakeholders meeting:

a) The possible impact on animal production and consumer protection of the WHO list of critically important antimicrobials for human use and the OIE list of veterinary critically important antimicrobials.
The WVA is in full support of the initiatives taken by the OIE (Terrestrial Animal Health Code, 16th edition – 2007 - APPENDIX 3.9.3) which provide guidelines for the responsible and prudent use of antimicrobial agents in veterinary medicine. The WVA believes that the prudent and responsible use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine is an essential management option for the prevention, control and treatment of animal diseases in maintaining animal health. The concept of animal health covers not only the absence of disease in animals, but it includes the critical relationship between the health of animals and their welfare. The WVA believes, therefore, that animal welfare is an important component of animal health. In concert with that fact, the relief of animal suffering from infectious diseases through the veterinary availability of effective antimicrobials is essential for the humane treatment of animals. Therefore, any decision to prohibit or restrict the use of veterinary critically important antimicrobials (VCIA) would have great impact on animal health and animal welfare.
