Dear Colleagues and Friends of Veterinary Medicine:

Saturday, April 28 is the World Veterinary Day of 2007. This is the day to celebrate a great profession and show its greatness throughout the World. You might ask why do we need such a celebration? All veterinarians are aware of the multitude of beneficial professional activities and artful practices that the profession does for its patients and clients.

In talking with my colleagues and the public throughout the world, I have experienced two definite emotions – one of joy and one of sadness.

I feel gleeful joy in global colleagues and learning the great things they do for their patients, and the global society the profession serves. On the other hand, I feel extreme sadness when I learn of the lack of awareness of the diverse scientific activities our profession by non-veterinarians that I meet on airplanes, buses, trains and in public meeting places, department stores and restaurants. The public as a whole just does not know the great diversity of the veterinary profession. They are unaware that we are involved in food safety and other public health programs. Although the public may have a high level of respect for the profession, it knows little of the veterinary profession’s continuous support of animal welfare and well being.

To help educate the public, the theme for this year's World Veterinary Day is "Celebrate our Diversity". It can be celebrated by each veterinarian, veterinary clinic, veterinary organization or agency in a way that each believes best demonstrates the contributions of the scientific activities from the veterinary profession. In order to educate the informational media, public officials, and the general public, they all must be well informed through messages and exhibits that we veterinarians are key players in all areas of public heath, as well as animal health and welfare.

Through World veterinary Day, let us all work towards one emotion, that of joy, for the veterinary medical profession.

Dr Leon Russell
President

Focus on International Health Security

World Health Day 2007, to be celebrated on April 7, 2007, focuses on “international health security”.

The veterinary medical profession joins the World Health Organization in supporting World Health Day 2007, and will invest its energy and knowledge to build a safer future through global investment in health.

Threats to health know no borders, which is well illustrated by threat of pandemic influenza presented by the global spread of avian influenza caused by the H5N1 virus. Of the newly emerging infectious diseases, over 75% are zooonoses in that animals and humans share the diseases.

Well over a century ago, the “father of pathology”, physician Sir William Osler, stated that “veterinary medicine and human medicine complement each other and should be considered one medicine.” The WVA supports the “one medicine” concept to build a safer future through a one medicine global response to emerging and re-emerging infectious disease such as Rift Valley fever, Influenza H5N1, bubonic plague, West Nile virus and dozens of other threats to humankind.

Dr Leon Russell, President

Worldwide Experience Launches Wildlife Veterinary Programme

Worldwide Experience is sending veterinary students from all over the world to South Africa to partake in a new wildlife veterinary programme titled "Vets Go Wild"!

The first programme kicks off on the 12th July and runs for 16 days. Two identical programmes follow this, one on the 1st and the other on the 19th Aug.

Amakhala & Shamwari Game Reserves in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, are the settings for a brand new 16 day module for students undertaking veterinary courses at selected UK and USA universities. The first term of the ‘Vets Go Wild’ programme is set to begin in July 2007, and will be led by Shamwari’s expert wildlife team alongside specialists from Amakhala Game Reserve.

The concept has been created by Paul Gardiner, MD of Worldwide Experience and Nico van Zyl, a UK-based Veterinarian Nurse who, through his veterinarian work experience, identified the need for vet students to broaden their training experience through participating in conservation-based field expeditions.

Shamwari Game Reserve forms nearly 25,000 hectares of malaria-free ‘bushveld’, with a goal of supporting responsible tourism and conservation. The project has been named one of the world’s most successful conservation projects, with the land having been bought and rejuvenated piece by piece by its founder, Adrian Gardiner.

The reserve’s Wildlife Department has received the Global Nature Fund award for Best Conservation Practice, and Dr. Johan Joubert, Shamwari’s Wildlife Manager, was voted by the Endangered Wildlife Trust as one of South Africa’s Top Ten Conservationists. Other key figures involved in the Vets Go Wild programme are John O’Brien, Shamwari’s Head Ecologist, as well as Dr. William Fowlds, resident Vet from Amakhala Game Reserve. Dr. William Fowlds also assists Addo National Park with ongoing conservation work as the park continues its expansion plans. Addo now incorporates a marine reserve, so the module can offer the vet students the opportunity to learn more about the extensive marine life along the coast of South Africa.

The Wildlife Departments at Shamwari and Amakhala run intensive and carefully orchestrated monitoring and game introduction programmes, making this a fantastic work experience opportunity for veterinary students. Participants will be involved in working with the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard), game capture projects, analysis of animal diet, predator monitoring, rhino management, microchip implanting, as well as work with the Born Free Foundation at their Big Cat Rescue Centre on Shamwari Game Reserve. All of this allowing for ideal extramural study (EMS) opportunities.

There will also be lectures at Shamwari and Amakhala’s teaching facilities, focusing on identification and tracking, diseases and reproduction, as well as on the environmental and societal impact the wildlife reserves on the surrounding areas.

“We’d like the Vets Go Wild programme to become the UK’s and the USA’s official African Wildlife Campus for all veterinarian students”, explained Paul Gardiner.

A 16 day veterinarian nurse module will also be made available.

For information on participating, contact Worldwide Experience on +44 1483 860560 or via www.worldwideexperience.com.

AMP Marks World Veterinary Day

Source: Americans for Medical Progress (AMP)

April 28th is observed as World Veterinary Day, designed to recognize and promote veterinary medicine's many contributions to human and animal health.

For the occasion, AMP's Director of Public Affairs Kenneth Satterfield has written a commentary of how animal research has aided veterinary medicine, and the opposition it faces from animal rights groups. He writes:

"More of us today are thinking about animal research and for the wrong reasons. We are deluged by wealthy animal rights organizations using their considerable resources to persuade us that animal research is cruel, unnecessary, and not supported by the scientific community. The tactics employed by these groups consist of misrepresentations, sensationalism, and cherry-picked statements by physicians and scientists who are not part of the mainstream research community."

World Veterinary Day to be celebrated April 28

Source:

The World Veterinary Association encourages veterinarians to celebrate World Veterinary Day on Saturday, April 28.

"World Veterinary Day celebrates and showcases the vast contributions that veterinarians make to the health and welfare of both people and pets," said Dr. Leon H. Russell, president of the WVA and former AVMA president.

"People know and understand that we care for pets and food animals, but we need to show the world how diverse we are as a profession," he continued. "Veterinarians do so much more."

Dr. Russell encourages practitioners to host an open house, visit school programs, and make this one day a time to showcase how veterinarians touch the lives of many every day.

"This is our opportunity to educate the global society about how veterinarians care for every aspect of the animal kingdom," Dr. Russell said.

"Not everyone knows that members of our profession are in Asia combating avian influenza and working to help make sure that it does not become a pandemic," he continued. "Veterinary researchers around the world are investigating clues to unlocking the secret to various diseases in human and animal health and, right here at home, veterinarians are protecting our country from (bioterrorism) and agroterrorism."

LASSie - Langkawi Animal Shelter & Sanctuary Foundation

The Foundation provides a sanctuary for abandoned and stray cats and dogs on the idyllic Malaysian island of Langkawi, and is working to stem the growth in number of strays on the island. It urgently needs volunteer vets to help with neutering and general veterinary work at the sanctuary.

Langkawi is one hour's flight from Kuala Lumpur and is beautiful and unspoilt. It has miles of white sand beach, warm seas and huge swathes of unexplored rainforest. In addition to inactivity on the beach and numerous spas, the island also offers many activities (including mangrove tours, sailing, trekking, wildlife viewing, canopy adventures, fishing, etc), a friendly population, delicious food and a fascinating local culture (homestays with local families are available). A stay on Langkawi volunteering at the animal sanctuary would be both rewarding and unforgettable.

WORLD VETERINARY DAY: SATURDAY 28 APRIL 2007 – COME CELEBRATE OUR DIVERSITY

Source:

From The Best of Care to BVA Overseas Group and Global Responsibilities

World Veterinary Day (WVD) is held annually on the last Saturday of April and this week (Saturday 28 April) around the world, from Ghana to Japan and Namibia to the United States veterinarians will be celebrating the profession’s diversity by showcasing its contribution to the health and welfare of both people and animals and indeed to the national and international economy, food security and development.

In the UK, with WVD coinciding with National Pet Month and its important emphasis on responsible pet ownership, the benefits of pets for people and people for pets, the role, value and contribution to society of working companion animals and the role of and services available from the profession the British Veterinary Association (BVA) has launched The Best of Care, an on-line guide to professional health care for pets. The leaflet celebrates the diversity of companion animal practice and is designed to assist pet owners by providing an insight into the respective roles of the veterinary practice team and how to go about choosing a veterinary practice as well as explaining the basis for veterinary fees, the value of pet insurance, the process by which medicines are licensed and what to do in the event of problems arising.

The BVA Overseas Group has, however, a global remit and member Professor John Cooper, has made an impassioned contribution to the celebrations from his current base in the West Indies.

“When, on Saturday, World Veterinary Day is commemorated” he said “some will say ‘But what do vets do other than treat pets and visit farms?’ The answer is ‘much, much more.’ As my colleague Tess Sprayson commented “We are probably the only profession that understands the human-animal dynamic that exists to some extent in every community throughout the world. Our daily work involves actions and decisions that affect not only the animals we treat but also their human partners that live and work alongside them. No other profession understands the social implications, epidemiology of disease, biosecurity and public health issues involved.”

Professor Cooper continued “The global role of the veterinary profession has never been more important. The daily movement of people and commodities, including animal products, means that infectious diseases can rapidly spread from one continent to another and threaten the health and lives both animals and humans. Avian influenza, West Nile virus infection, Rift Valley Fever and SARS are but few of the dozens of ‘emerging’ diseases that require a strong veterinary input if there are to be contained and controlled. Vets also play an increasing role in helping to alleviate the burden of rabies – a disease that still kills around 100 children a day.

“Millions of people depend upon animal products – milk, meat, eggs, wool, honey – for their survival. In a world where one in three children go to bed hungry every night, the need to keep such animals healthy is imperative. Those who depend most upon animals for their livelihood are the poor and veterinary surgeons remain at the forefront of those who are involved in ministering to these people and their livestock - often in isolated and sometimes dangerous places,

The BVA Overseas Group works closely with other organisations in the UK and further afield, to help ensure that animals get a fair deal. Whether a pet cat, dog or budgerigar in the Home Countries, fingerling trout on a fish farm in Ayrshire, working donkeys in Syria or milking camels in Kazakhstan, animals need vets if they are to remain healthy and productive and if they are to be spared unnecessary pain and preventable diseases.

“And it is not only domesticated animals that benefit on a daily basis, on every continent, from the skills, knowledge and compassion of veterinarians together with those, such as veterinary nurses, who support them. Wildlife are an increasingly important part of the veterinary surgeon’s responsibilities. There is a growing awareness of the threats that our planet faces as animals and plants become extinct and habitats are destroyed or permanently damaged by such factors as pollution and climate change. As part of measures to counter these changes, members of the veterinary profession participate in conservation programmes and the promotion of ‘ecosystem health’.

“On World Veterinary Day 2007 it is fitting to recognise the part played by the veterinary profession in providing care for ‘all creatures great and small’, the millions of people for whom animals are essential and the fragile world in which they live.”

Pondicherry Veterinary Association, India The PONDICHERRY VETERINARY Association wIll celebrate the workd veterinary day on 28 04 2007 it wlll conduct two health camp in two villages.the importance of zoonotic diseases will also explain to farmers.

INDIA The Faculty and students of College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Palmapur ( INDIA) celebrated the 7th World Veterinary Day, under the banner of Veterinary and Animal Science Teachers Association (VASTA), which is celebrated world over on last Saturday of April every year. The function was presided over by senior professor of the college Dr. C. Varshney. This World Veterinary Day was centered to celebrate its diversity, where veterinarians are playing a key role as public health experts besides looking after animal health and welfare. The World Veterinary Association mooted Veterinarians to work with one emotion that is for joy for veterinary medical profession. One of the Senior Veterinary college students while talking on the behalf of the students gave a flash of dreams of younger generation about the profession. Thereafter, Dr. Mandeeep Sharma, President of VASTA highlighted the importance of animals as a whole in maintaining the ecosystem besides a modest contribution of 8-10% of GDP with an annual growth of 4-5% by the Animal Husbandry section. He also emphasized that the Indian poultry industry is occupying 5th position in the world with an annual growth of 20%. The SWOT analysis revealed little satisfactory situation on institutional front but we still lag much behind in terms of qualified manpower. The state of Himachal Pradesh has a great potential in Animal Husbandry section and the same can be realized with an Independent Veterinary University as has been done in many other states of India. At National level, the profession needs an up gradation in the form of Indian Council of Veterinary Research for its better output from this profession. Prof. C. Varshney in his presidential remarks lauded the role of Veterinarian in society as public health expert and its importance in food safety, starting from pasture to plate. He also advised all professionals to be better equipped to face the challenges of the time. He spoke very high about the students being self disciplined. The function ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Y.P.Thakur, Joint Secretary of VASTA. Since its establishment, the chapter has engaged in a number of its traditional roles that include hosting of Annual World Veterinary Day and public enlightenment campaigns, especially in media houses. Today, Saturday April 28th, 2007, the Sokoto Local Chapter of the NVMA witnessed another edition of the World Veterinary Day celebration held at the Congregation Hall, City Campus Complex, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto-Nigeria, under the distinguished chairmanship of Dr. Abdulkadir U. Junaidu, the Honourable Commissioner of the Sokoto State Ministry of Animal Health and Forestry. The Saturday’s event brought together all local veterinarians as well as scientists from outside of Veterinary Discipline which include: Human Medicine, Sciences, Art and Humanities, technicians, and Religions. Nomads/pastoralists, farmers, business men and students representatives also composed of participants. “World Veterinary Day celebration is an annual event organized by veterinarians in different aspects of the profession around the world” says Dr. Abdullahi A. Magaji, Chairman of the NVMA Sokoto Chapter as well as the Head of Department of Public Health and Animal Production, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto-Nigeria. The theme of this year’s activity is entitled “Celebrate our Diversity”. This implies show-casing the contribution of the profession to the society in the area of health and welfare of both people and animals, and indeed to the national and international economy, food security and development. To celebrate this year’s World Veterinary Day, the Sokoto Chapter of the NVMA, with the assistance of the National body, has packaged the following: • Free anti-rabies vaccination of the dogs’ population in Sokoto and its environs which starts today and lasts for a week. “This idea is to remind and encourage dog owners on the significance of annual anti-rabies vaccination of the dogs, as well as a control measure against the deadly disease in humans resulting from the bite of unvaccinated dogs”, says Dr. Magaji, “the exercise will also serve as a reminder to the community as well as the policy makers on the need to be responsible dog owners by following to the later, the provisions of the National Dog Control Act of 1968”. • Lecture presentation entitled Roles of Veterinarian to the Society. • Production of sticker to, for the remaining part of the year, constantly remind veterinarians of the need to make positive contributions in their area of calling, as pledged to do during their induction/oath taking. The Seminar, which was presented by Dr. Abdulkadir U. Junaidu, highlighted multi-dimensional roles of a veterinarian in the society among which include: animal health, public health and food safety, drugs and biologics, teaching and research, government, military, private industry, and national development. The speaker defined veterinarians as medical professionals whose primary responsibility is protecting the health and welfare of animals and people. The paper stressed that veterinarians’ roles are not only looking after the animals and ensuring safety to human health, but also in administration, politics and other aspects of life. The speaker exemplified with some veterinarians such as Professor Iseoun (Nigeria’s Minister of Science and Technology), Professor Saro (a Senator in the Nigeria’s parliament), Professor Abdulkadir (former Secretary of the Nigerian University Commission) and Professor Tomori (Vice Chancellor at the Redeemer’s University), among others, as testimonies of the great men abound in our enclave. “We need to diversify so that we can seize the opportunity to promote our profession, support our colleagues and ensure the overall well-being of the society”, concluded Dr. Junaidu. Dr. Garba H. Sharubutu, the National President of the NVMA who was in Sokoto to celebrate the World Veterinary Day commented that “the NVMA Sokoto Chapter is the most active branch in Nigeria. Among the branches across the country, Sokoto Chapter was the first to start celebrating the World Veterinary Day and to get its activities publicized’. Dr. Sharubutu also eulogized on the giant strides taken by the Sokoto State Ministry of Animal Health and Forestry in the fight against Avian Influenza and trans-boundary animal diseases, which was what brought the Avian Influenza in control. On the ongoing census of veterinarians in Nigeria, ending this month, he said it is an effort to determine the actual numbers of actively practicing veterinarians in the country for comparison with the existing ones in the National Veterinary Register. He also advised on the importance of media involvement in airing the NVMA activities, as a means of publicizing the type of work veterinarians do to the general community. Several comments were made at the event’s venue among which includes Professor Daneji’s, Dr. Uko’s, Dr. Agaie’s and Dr. Olorede’s. Professor Aminu I. Daneji, the university’s Dean of Postgraduate School as well as a specialist on Ruminant Medicine also rated the Sokoto NVMA as “the most-active of all chapters in the country”. Professor Daneji called on both the state and federal governments to consider the control of zoonotic diseases as one of the necessary component in the attainment of zoonoses control in Nigeria. “The government should establish and fund researchers that will come up with the true picture of endemic zoonoses in the region and the country at large, in both humans and animal hosts”, he concluded. Dr. O.J. Uko, the Director of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Veterinary Teaching Hospital was “highly delighted to be a veterinarian and a veterinarian in Nigeria”. He encouraged on the need to improve on the economic, health and value of the people apart from biosecurity. Dr. Bello M. Agaie, the university’s Dean of Students Affairs as well as the National Secretary, NVMA advised on the need for veterinarians contribution in the initiation of the association’s Secretariat at Abuja. Dr. Bayo R. Olorede, an Associate Professor of Animal Nutrition, viewed diversity as the presence of a wide-range of variation in the qualities or attributes under discussion. “The creations of both animals and humans are diversified into tribes, races, religions, and species, breeds, strains, respectively. The profession of Veterinary Medicine is also diversified with its several specialties and there is need to celebrate it”, he opined. Aminu Shittu, DVM. MESSAGE ON WORLD VETERINARY DAY BY Dr. R. H. USMANI ANIMAL HUSBANDRY COMMISSIONER / CHIEF VETERINARY OFFICER M/O FOOD, AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK I am delighted to see that World Veterinary Day is being observed in Pakistan on 28th April of each year in recognition of contribution of veterinarians in the areas of animal health and ensuring safety and security of food of animal origin to human population. This event realizes the importance and role of veterinarians for livestock sector in meeting the protein gap in the country. The theme of this year World Veterinary Day is " Let us celebrate our diversity". Taking along with this theme, M/O Food, Agriculture & Livestock in assistance with the private sector has launched massive campaign on various aspects of livestock sector. It focused on improving animal husbandry practices, better animal health and prevention and control of livestock diseases in the country. The population growth, urbanization and increase in per capita income are the key stimulus for increased demand of livestock and livestock products. This has put an additional pressure on veterinarians to perform their role in a more professional and dynamic way to improver supply line and consequently to meet the demand of livestock and livestock products of the country. Livestock is a provincial subject and Federal Government assists the provinces in their endeavors to promote and improve pace of development in livestock sector. We all know that livestock plays an important role in the economy of the country and is pivotal in our rural socio-economic system. Thus this sector provides an important tool for poverty alleviation in the country. Livestock sector contributed 50.0 percent of the agriculture value added and 11 percent to national GDP during 2005 - 06. It is a net source of foreign exchange earnings with approximately 8.0 % share annually. Recognizing considerable potentials and opportunities in livestock sector, a separate Livestock Development Policy has been approved in principle by the Prime Minster of Pakistan. It envisages private sector led livestock development and moving from subsistence farming to market-oriented and commercial farming covering entire value chain. Proposal for Corporate Livestock Farming is under active consideration. It will include Long term land lease by the provincial governments; Agriculture income tax regime; Duty on land transfer to CAF waived (except NWFP); Zero rated duty and no sales tax on imported machinery; Exemption of the dividend from tax and 100% Equity allowed for foreign companies etc. Two private sector led companies namely “Livestock and Dairy Development Board” and “Pakistan Dairy Development Company” have also been established. These measures will accelerate the pace of development of livestock sector. In order to speed up the pace of development, Federal Government has initiated number of mage development projects in livestock sector to the tune of Rs. 6.8 billion. Those under implementation include establishment of “Livestock and Dairy Development Board” “Pakistan Dairy Development Company” “ Prime Minister’s Special Initiatives on Livestock” “Milk Collection Processing and Dairy Production and Development Program” “Livestock Production and Development for Meat Production” and “Strengthening of Livestock Services Project – Rinderpest Eradication Program”. Two projects namely "Prevention of Bird Flu Epidemic" and "Emergency Assistance for the Control of Avian Influenza" are also under implementation. An umbrella project amounting to Rs. 1180.142 million has also been recommended for approval to higher forum. MINFAL in collaboration with all stakeholders is prepared to take challenge of controlling Avian influenza in the country. Pakistan Veterinary activities revolves around four prongs namely Policy, Veterinary education/research and veterinary extension. A number of new veterinary faculties have been started in the country. They are 06 in Punjab, 02 in NWFP and one each in Balochistan and Sindh. It is good sign that private sector has also entered into veterinary education. Setting up of Veterinary College in Baqui Veterinary department is an example. Govt is investing in livestock sector, veterinary education, livestock infrastructure etc. This is now challenging job for our veterinarians to come up with this daunting task of meeting the national requirements of meat, milk, eggs and other livestock products and generate surplus for export.
